Kentucky Coal Education Saving Plan Trust Information

History and Recipients

In 1997, the Kentucky Coal Council (now the Division of Fossil Fuels & Utility Services) approved the first of five $40,000 scholarship competition grants available to fourth- and fifth-grade students in Kentucky.  Students competed in eight regions to win a $5,000 Savings Plan Trust Account to be awarded for approved post-secondary academic expenses.  After five years, this program had awarded thirty-eight $5,000 interest-bearing accounts.  During the presentation to each winner, the electric utility industry of Kentucky presented a new computer and printer to the school in honor of the recipient.

The Kentucky Office of Energy Policy has listed below students who are furthering their education with the help of their savings plan trust account:

  • Ben Chaffins (presently attending the University of Kentucky;
  • Allison L. Colley (presently attending John A. Gupton College);
  • Ryan M. Daknis (presently attending Brigham Young University);
  • Rebecca L. Hazlett (presently attending University of the Cumberlands);
  • Charles P. McCord (presently attending Alice Lloyd College);
  • Owen Marshall (presently attending the University of Louisville);
  • Jacob Price (presently attending Georgetown College);
  • Megan Skaff (presently attending the University of Kentucky);
  • Devan Smith (presently attending the United States Military Academy at West Point);
  • Rosanna K. Smith (presently attending Yale University); and
  • Micah Spencer (presently attending West Virginia University).
