Energy Research, Development & Demonstration

researchThe Division of Energy Research, Development & Demonstration was established by the Governor and the General Assembly in October 2006 to replace the Energy Research, Development & Demonstration Program that was established in 2005.

The Program awarded over $3 million to grantees during 2005 and 2006. Upgrading the Program to a Division will enhance the agency's ability to fulfill its mission.

The Division will benefit the citizens of the Commonwealth by addressing key recommendations made in the state's first comprehensive energy strategy, Kentucky's Energy: Opportunities for our Future.

  • Support energy-related research and development that will benefit Kentuckians by helping to:
    • Maintain Kentucky’s low-cost energy,
    • Develop Kentucky’s energy resources responsibly, and
    • Preserve Kentucky’s environmental quality.
  • Increase energy research and development capacity at Kentucky’s public universities.
  • Encourage knowledge and technology exchange between the universities, national energy laboratories and private industry.
  • Facilitate the universities’ ability to leverage research funding from federal and private sources.

To fulfill these objectives, the Office of Energy Policy manages several programs to provide financial support to Kentucky’s public universities and industry for energy-related research, development and demonstration.
